Free concert at B&O Museum honors Underground Railroad with original music by Wordsmith.

A troupe of 10 students from four Baltimore middle and high schools have been working with the Baltimore rap artist, writer and musician Wordsmith (birth name Anthony Parker) to create a public performance inspired by “Black Woman Genius,” an art exhibit running through Sept. 30 at the Reginald F. Lewis of Maryland History & Culture.

In a unique intersection of art and performance, the museum is preparing to give voice to the artists. Next month, eight middle and high school students from the "Rise with a Purpose" theater company will perform original monologues about the Black women artists featured in the exhibit. Wordsmith, an artist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist and the owner of Rise with a Purpose, shared his creative process.

In recent years—and to great acclaim—symphony orchestras and hip-hop artists have teamed up; songwriter and poet Wordsmith was an early adopter of this fusion. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Wordsmith has collaborated with his hometown band—the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra—since 2018. As an artistic partner of that ensemble, he has re-interpreted works by Saint-Saëns, Stravinsky and Beethoven, and was commissioned earlier this year to write and premiere Network to Freedom, a reflection on the Underground Railroad.

The 2024 finalists were selected by an anonymous jury, and exemplify excellence in three areas: mastery of craft, depth of artistic exploration, and a unique vision. Baker Artist Award Finalists are divided equally amongst the website’s six artistic disciplines: visual, literary, interdisciplinary, film/ video, performance and music. All artists who have received a cumulative total of less than $20,000 in previous prizes remain eligible for a Baker Artist Award.

The MLK Day event, scheduled for 7 p.m. in the 1884 B&O Roundhouse, “promises an unprecedented fusion of history and music,” according to a news release. It will include the world premiere of a song by Baltimore artist Wordsmith, commissioned by the BSO, titled “Network to Freedom.”

A new, original song will be premiered, commissioned by the BSO and written by Wordsmith, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Artistic Partner. “Network to Freedom” is an homage to those Freedom Seekers whose stories are told in the museum’s Underground Railroad exhibit. “The Underground Railroad: Freedom Seekers on the B&O Railroad” exhibit was unveiled in 2022, and the museum is designated as a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Site since 2021.

Nashville-based pianist and composer Kory Caudill was on a trip to Liverpool doing racial reconciliation work with The Episcopal Church when he heard the horrific story of how British teenager Anthony Walker was murdered in a racist hate crime. That night, Caudill sat down at the piano to compose a melody for Walker. Baltimore rapper Wordsmith later added earnest lyrics, turning the song into a hopeful lullaby for Walker.
